Our lab is currently raising a population of Floridian Prunum apcinum (Menke, 1828) for use in experimental studies of growth and development. To complement this research, we are also studying a large collection of living populations of P. apicinum from Florida Bay from different environmental conditions. Both of these projects will help us better understand the timing of shell growth and development as well as how different environmental variables influence patterns of biomineralization and the microstructural composition of shell features. These results will be of great importance to interpreting patterns of developmental evolution in extinct Prunum species.
