Many science teachers in New York City are unaware of the educational and socio-economic challenges that face Dominican Americans living in New York City . Currently, more than 80,000 Dominican American students are enrolled in the New York City school system. Dominican Americans comprise the largest share of students entering the NYC public school system since the 1980's (Leavitt, 2001). Community School District 6, the area with the highest concentration of Dominican American children, has one of New York State 's worst records in terms of performance testing (Torres-Saillant and Hernandez, 1998:87). Dominican American students as a whole are performing poorly in school and are pursuing higher education far less frequently relative to many other ethnic and racial groups (Torres-Saillant and Hernandez, 1998).

The Dominican Republic Project at The City College will begin offering free professional development workshops for science teachers who work with Dominican American students. The workshops will provide curriculum modules, multimedia materials, and web-based activities for MS and HS students. They will also include information on pedagogical strategies for using these materials, overviews of Dominican culture and society, and overviews of the natural history and science of the Dominican Republic . Selected participants in the workshops will be provided the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and participate in a cultural and science immersion experience. These participants will be provided with free airfare and hotel costs during the trip. Information about the workshops will be posted on this website. Please check back for more information.
